New Exhibit at Crocker Features Surrealism through the Eyes of a Collector

May 23, 2005 – Sacramento , Calif. – A world of dream, fetishism, nonsense and play is unlocked from the subconscious mind in a new exhibit featuring Surrealism at the Crocker. On view July 9 – September 11, Accommodations of Desire: Surrealist Works on Paper Collected by Julien Levy, pays tribute to the man who defined and propelled the Surrealist movement.

The exhibit features more than 100 drawings, collages, prints, watercolors and photographs by key artists of the Surrealist movement, including Salvador Dalí, Man Ray and Gyula Halász, known as Brassaï . Julien Levy was one of the most influential and important art dealers of the 20 th century. Exhibiting groundbreaking work in his Manhattan gallery from the 1920s through the 1940s, Levy was at the forefront of the Surrealist movement, vigorously promoting and collecting Surrealist art and forming intimate friendships with the artists.

Not only does this collection offer a beautiful glimpse into the fascinating world of Surrealist art, it is also a reflection of Levy’s personal passion and affinity for the concepts and artists of this movement. Throughout Levy’s life, the personal and the professional often interlaced, and his ambitions for the artists he exhibited assumed many forms – promoting Surrealist films, history and even a Surrealist fun house for the 1939 World’s Fair. As Ingrid Schaffner writes in the exhibition catalogue, “Levy not only sold Surrealism, he lived it.” Depicted in the work of artists like Dalí , the many forms of desire – conscious and subconscious – provide the central theme of this exhibition.
