Crocker Welcomes New Curator
to Museum Staff

July 11, 2005 – Sacramento, Calif. – The Crocker Art Museum has appointed William Breazeale, Ph.D., as Associate Curator of Art to oversee the Old Master drawings and European paintings in the Museum’s permanent collection as well as temporary loan exhibitions. Breazeale brings widespread museum experience to the Crocker through internships and fellowships at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art.

A scholar of Old Master drawings, Breazeale has a Ph. D. in the History of Art from the University of Maryland. His recently completed dissertation, entitled Sketchbook and Zibaldone: Studies in the Theory and Practice of Disegno in Sixteenth-century Italy, examined 16 th century Italian sketchbooks. He also received the Fullbright Full Grant for study in Italy, spending the 2003-04 academic year in Rome.

The Crocker’s superb drawings collection drew Breazeale to the Museum. In addition, its fine paintings collection is compatible with many of his personal interests, including 19 th-century academic painting and 17 th-century Dutch and Italian painting.
