Crocker Art Museum Awarded
Prestigious National Grant

$150,000 grant allows Crocker
to bring collection online

July 25, 2005 – Sacramento, Calif. – The Crocker Art Museum was among 24 recipients in the state of California and 169 nationwide to be awarded the highly competitive Museums for America grant by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Continuing the work started three years ago with a $500,000 grant from the SBC Foundation, the IMLS grant, in the amount of $149,993, will enable the Crocker to create digital images of the three-dimensional objects in the collection. Once the work is completed, these images will then be available on the Museum’s website.

The goal of the Digital Crocker project is to digitally photograph and compile electronic information about the entire collection into a single database, allowing the Crocker to maintain detailed records of each object to serve as curatorial, educational and public resources. Furthermore, this project will enable the public to view pieces from the Crocker’s renowned collections of contemporary ceramics, European porcelain and Asian art and artifacts, which are currently unavailable to the public due to a lack of display space.

IMLS was established in 1996 with the overall mission to provide support to the nation’s museums and libraries, recognizing them as invaluable institutions that serve as educational resources in their communities. This year, IMLS awarded a total of $16.8 million in Museums for America grants, the largest federal grant available to museums and libraries across the country.
