Impossible Worlds Come to the Crocker

M.C. Escher: Rhythm of Illusion

April 4, 2006 – Sacramento, Calif. –On view from June 10 – September 3, 2006 at the Crocker Art Museum, M.C. Escher: Rhythm of Illusion probes the fascinating world of the Dutch artist. His meticulous technique and distinctive vision have made him one of the most popular and intriguing artists of the 20th century.

"The M.C. Escher show has the potential to be the best-attended in Museum history due to the popularity of his work – I think most dorm rooms for the past 30 years have had an M.C. Escher poster grace their walls,” states Museum Director Lial Jones. “The simply-complex, puzzling images offer a sense of off – balance symmetry few artists have replicated. I’m sure visitors will spend hours in our gallery investigating his art from every possible angle.”

Delving into the world of M.C. Escher requires journeys through mazes of jolting angles, uncanny perspectives and dizzying multiple viewpoints. His prints present a world where reality is often distorted, connections between elements made and unmade in a seemingly arbitrary fashion. Yet these distortions come from his instinct for exploring basic artistic questions: does a rectangular arrangement of light and dark lines represent a ceiling, a window, a hole in the floor or all three? This exhibition, organized by the Portland Art Museum, brings 70 beautiful and multifaceted images of Escher’s impossible worlds to the Crocker. A special Family Opening Celebration will be held on June 10th.
