Rocklin Residents Enjoy Ansel Adams Photographs for Free on April 22

February 14, 2007 – Sacramento, Calif. – Residents of Rocklin will be admitted to the Crocker Art Museum for free on April 22 to celebrate the display of 22 photographs of the Rocklin landscape by Ansel Adams. The photographs, selected and gifted to the Museum by Adams, are currently on view through May 6 along with Yosemite 1938: On the Trail with Ansel Adams and Georgia O’Keeffe. As part of Rocklin Free Day, sponsored by Whitney Oaks Golf Club, Rocklin residents receive free admission with an ID or other proof of address.

Ansel Adams came to the Sacramento region in 1962 to photograph the rolling hills and open pastures around Rocklin. In particular, he trained his camera on the granite boulders and oaks dominating the local landscape.

These images not only complement the traveling exhibition but offer insight into Adams’ broader range of subjects. While more meditative and introspective than Adams’ Yosemite views, his foothill subjects are illumined by the artist’s signature approach to light and shadow. With the camera’s lens, he unveils and sharpens nature’s myriad foothill textures but also man’s taming of the landscape.

The Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and continues as the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events and programs to augment its collections of California, European and Asian artworks. The Crocker is located at 216 O Street in downtown Sacramento. Museum hours are 10 AM–5 PM, Tuesday–Sunday; Thursday until 9 PM. For more information on exhibits and events call (916) 264-5423 or visit crockerartmuseum.org.
