FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Show Your Pride at the Crocker Promised gift commemorates Stonewall Riots May 27, 2008 – Sacramento, CA – Pride Week continues at the Crocker Art Museum with a special evening celebrating the promised gift of Sandow Birk’s painting Stonewall on Thursday, June 26, 6-8 p.m. Museum Director Lial A. Jones and Chief Curator Scott A. Shields will discuss lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender works in the Museum collection and future growth of the collection. The reception is open to the public and free with admission. The painting Stonewall was created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots as part of an exhibition held by the artist in New York. Stonewall depicts a larger than life scene from Greenwich Village in 1969 when a conflict arose between police officers and gay and transgender people. Disturbances continued for five days, making this a national event covered by the media and bringing the issues of gay rights to a wider public. Today gay pride celebrations are held on the last Sunday in June in remembrance of the Stonewall rebellion. “We are excited to share this evening with the community,” said Lial A. Jones, Museum Director, Crocker Art Museum. “Everyone is welcome to join in celebrating this work and discuss the importance of diversity in our collection.” The Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and continues as the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events and programs to augment its collections of California, European and Asian artworks. The Crocker is located at 216 O Street in Downtown Sacramento. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday; Thursday until 9 p.m. Admission is free on Sundays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information on exhibits and events call (916) 808-7000 or visit crockerartmuseum.org. # # # Media Contact: Kathleen Conaty Join the Crocker’s email press list.
