Get Your Warhol Fix at the Crocker's Warhol-a-thon

Enjoy a rare viewing and discussion of Andy Warhol's utterly original and provocative films as part of the Crocker's current American Pop Exhibition

August 28, 2008 - Sacramento, Calif. - Take part in a daylong event celebrating the art of Andy Warhol on Saturday, October 4, in tandem with the current American Pop exhibit now showing at the Crocker Art Museum. Warhol worked across a wide range of media throughout his life-painting, photography, drawing and sculpture-and he was one of the very first artists to experiment with film as art. Enjoy screening some of his scarcely seen films and participate in a discussion of his lasting impact in the world of art.

Starting at 10 a.m., view an excerpt from the PBS documentary American Masters: Andy Warhol, detailing the artist's work as a filmmaker. At 11:15 a.m., get an exclusive look at two of Warhol's rarely shown films, Hair Cut and Screen Tests Reel 8, on special loan from the Andy Warhol Museum. Following these films, join an informal discussion led by actor Martin Miniaci. UC Davis professor Blake Stimson will present research from his forthcoming Warhol biography at 1:30 p.m. The last Warhol classic to be shown, The Velvet Underground & Nico, will start at 3 p.m., followed by an informal discussion of the film led by Martin Anaya of the Sacramento Film Festival.

American Pop, on view through November 2, is organized around the special display of Warhol's Athletes Series. Begun in 1977 and completed in 1979, the 10 paintings capture the decade's athletic superstars with the late-20th-century's ultimate expression of fame-a Warhol portrait. Additional works drawn from regional collections along with the Crocker's own holdings tell the story of how Warhol and other artists made Pop one of the most successful, yet controversial movements of the era.

The Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and continues as the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events and programs to augment its collections of California, European and Asian artworks. The Crocker is located at 216 O Street in Downtown Sacramento. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday; 1st and 3rd Thursdays until 9 p.m. Free admission on Sundays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. is made possible through the support of Bank of America.
