FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Senior Art Social Hearkens to Bygone Era Music, painting, games and storytelling and more. March 23, 2009 – Sacramento, Calif. – Discover an era gone by during a celebration of the life, work and times of Maxfield Parrish. The Crocker Art Museum invites older adults to the very first Senior Art Social on Tuesday, June 2, 2-4 p.m. Enjoy storytelling, the music of the Sacramento Rotary Rooters swing band, tour Maxfield Parrish and the Art of the Print, try creating art in the style of Parrish, and play gallery games like Landscape Bingo and Fantasy or Fact for unique prizes and surprises. “We wanted to celebrate and honor this visionary illustrator, “said Stacey Shelnut-Hendrick, Director of Education, Crocker Art Museum. “Many older adults grew up with Parrish prints, calendars and magazine illustrations in their homes, and we would like to give them an opportunity to rediscover some of his most renowned works.” The program will feature the storytelling of John Allan Cann and music from the Sacramento Rotary Rooters, featuring a five-piece saxophone section in addition to a trombonist, pianist, bass player and drummer. "We were originally a traditional jazz band, but we’ve evolved through changing combinations of members and instruments," says pianist Paul Stone, 82, the original bandleader. "We’re now 100 percent swing. Our current members are the most talented we’ve assembled, including several swing-era professionals." The band performs about 60 times a year at musical events, and the Rooter’s uplifting melodies and playful personalities are sure to please the crowd. Making its debut and only West Coast stop at the Crocker Art Museum, Fantasies and Fairy-tales: Maxfield Parrish and the Art of the Print offers a rare look at 95 of the popular commercial prints and illustrations for which the artists became known. One of the most important illustrators of the 20th century, Parrish was a major figure in the Golden Age of Illustration and continued to pursue his enduring vision for nearly a century. This event is free to Crocker Art Museum members and adults ages 65 and over. The Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and continues as the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events and programs to augment its collections of California, European and Asian artworks. The Crocker is located at 216 O Street in Downtown Sacramento.
