FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Crocker’s Third Thursday Jazz Summer Concert Series Features The Garrett Perkins Project July 16 May 26, 2009 – Sacramento, Calif. – An all-star cast of jazz musicians are slated to perform during the Crocker Art Museum’s popular Third Thursday Jazz Summer Concert Series. From May through September, concerts are held on the third Thursday of the month from 5:30-8 p.m. Light refreshments and beverages are available for purchase. Concerts are free to Crocker members and $10 for nonmembers. Saxophonist Garrett Perkins and his band will perform July 16. With a versatile range from bebop to modern contemporary jazz, Perkins is dedicated to promoting music that is at once educational and entertaining. Considered a child protégé at the age of 14, Perkins has evolved into one of the finest young saxophonists in the country. He studied at the renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston, and at the age of 15, he opened for Freddy Hubert and Mercer Ellington, son of the legendary Duke. The Sacramento Bee wrote, “In the jazz category, Garrett Perkins, playing Duke Ellington’s In a Sentimental Mood at a very slow tempo in a robust tone, provoked shouts when he began to improvise in the bridge of the song, eventually finishing with a long, high note that brought people to their feet.” The Third Thursday Jazz Summer Concert Series is supported in part by 94.7 KSSJ, Renwood Winery, Rubicon Brewing Co. and Pepsi.
