Crocker’s Classical Concert
Features Bach’s Unaccompanied
Suites for Cello July 26

May 28, 2009 – Sacramento, Calif. – Indulge in the rhythm, harmony and character of Johann Sebastian Bach’s compositions with cellist virtuoso Tanya Tomkins. On Sunday, July 26, 3-4 p.m., Tomkins will perform three of Bach's Unaccompanied Suites for Cello for the Crocker’s Classical Concert series.

“It is every cellist's dream to play Bach's Unaccompanied Suites for Cello,” says Tomkins. “I am grateful to have been asked to play three out of six of them for this concert. These pieces are musically and technically demanding and are an opportunity for improvisation, not so much on the notes themselves, but on their timing and inflection.”

As a dynamic recitalist and chamber musician on the modern cello, Tomkins has appeared to critical acclaim throughout Europe, Israel and the United States. She has performed at major concert halls, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Recital Hall, New York City’s Lincoln Center as part of the “Great Performances” series and the 92nd Street Y for the "Meet the Virtuoso" series in New York City.

For more than 50 years, the Crocker has hosted internationally renowned and talented local musicians for Crocker Classical Concerts. Due to construction for the Museum’s expansion, the concerts now take place on the California State University, Sacramento, campus in Capistrano Hall. Concerts are held on the fourth Sunday of every month from 3-4 p.m. and are free to members of the Crocker Art Museum, $12 for nonmembers and $5 for students and seniors. Free parking is available in Parking Structure I, which is adjacent to the Hall.

The Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and continues as the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley.
