FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Festival of Forms Marks Closing of Taiko drums, anime films, dance, hands-on art making and more August 21, 2009 – Sacramento, Calif. – The Crocker Art Museum will host a family-friendly afternoon of lively performances, anime films, Taiko drums, dance and art making on Sunday, October 18, 12-3 p.m. The Festival of Forms celebrates the innovative forms on view in Soaring Voices on the closing day of the exhibition. The Festival of Forms brings together the arts and culture of Japan, featuring the Northern California Koyasan Temple Children's Taiko Group and traditional Japanese dance by Sakura Minyo Doko Kai. Artist Linda S. Fitz Gibbon will demonstrate hand-building techniques while the Matsuyama-Sacramento Sister City Corporation will demonstrate traditional Japanese calligraphy. All ages will enjoy anime film and ignite their imagination with art-making activities. Soaring Voices celebrates the revolution in clay by the women who broke through the barrier of the once male-only field of Japanese ceramics. With more than 80 objects from vessels to sculpture, this exhibition surveys the accomplishments of 25 leading female figures in contemporary Japanese ceramics. “The women featured in this exhibition catalyzed contemporary Japanese clay,” said Diana L. Daniels, associate curator, Crocker Art Museum. “This exhibition is the most extensive effort to date to recognize their innovative and provocative production.” Admission to the Festival of Forms and Soaring Voices is $6 adults, $4 seniors, $3 students and free for children age six and under.
