FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Crocker Receives Grants From Two National OrganizationsSeptember 9, 2009 – Sacramento, CA – The Crocker Art Museum recently received grants from two national organizations: The Henry Luce Foundation in New York and the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation in Minnesota. A $125,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation will be used to reinterpret and reinstall the American art collection in the new wing set to open in 2010. The Crocker’s collection of American and Californian art will expand from two to 16 galleries to tell the history and art history of California in a national context. “The reinstallation will allow visitors to fully experience a collection that communicates a broader, and less frequently told, story of American art,” comments Scott A. Shields, associate director and chief curator, Crocker Art Museum. “With one of the nation’s premier collections of Californian art, it is a story we are uniquely positioned to tell.” The Henry Luce Foundation was established in 1936 by Henry R. Luce, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time Inc. The Foundation aims to bring important ideas to the center of American life, strengthen international understanding and foster innovation and leadership in academic, policy, religious and art communities. Since its creation, the Luce Foundation has awarded more than $600 million in grants. The Crocker is one of approximately 25 organizations that will receive an American art program award this year. The Margaret A. Cargill Foundation awarded the Museum a grant of $50,000 in support of arts education. The Crocker was among 500 nonprofits to receive similar grants and the only Sacramento-area museum. The granddaughter of William Cargill, who co-founded one of the world’s largest agribusiness companies, Cargill Inc., Margaret Cargill was an active philanthropist who often gave anonymously. The Foundation is responsible for identifying appropriate charitable organizations and making grants to a wide variety of charitable causes that were meaningful to Cargill, including the arts, children and education. The Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and continues as the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events and programs to augment its collections of California, European and Asian artworks. The Crocker is located at 216 O Street in Downtown Sacramento. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday; 1st and 3rd Thursdays until 9 p.m. Free admission on Sundays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. is made possible through the support of Bank of America.
