New Art Ark Installation Highlights Architecture
Newly installed Art Ark features The Art of Architecture and
makes connection to state curriculum
January 8, 2010 – Sacramento, Calif. – More than 18,000 students will experience the Crocker Art Museum this year without leaving their school campus. For 30 years, the Crocker has been bringing art to schools across the region through the Art Ark, the Museum’s mobile education center. In celebration of the Crocker’s 125,000-square-foot expansion, set to open in October 2010, the 52-foot-long Art Ark recently launched a new theme: Building Imagination: The Art of Architecture.
“Discussing architecture with young people encourages them to see their environment in a different way,” says Lyndsey Roush, outreach coordinator at the Crocker Art Museum. “We explore the art, science and purpose of architecture. This allows us to make connections between the visual art, science, math and history content standards in a way that is experiential and relevant to the student’s education.”
Each classroom tour of the Art Ark begins with a group discussion focusing on the history of architecture, the relationship between art and design, and how architecture reflects time, place and community ideals. Students then explore these concepts through multi-sensory, hands-on experiences, including building arches and cantilevers, identifying shapes and patterns, learning about advancements in green building materials, and designing their own buildings.
Unique to the Sacramento area, the Art Ark is distinguished in the nation as one of the first mobile art museums, and one of the few focusing on hands-on learning. Developed in 1980 as a means for schools to support art education in schools, the Art Ark has served nearly 450,000 students and more than 500 schools.

The Crocker Art Museum was established in 1885 and continues as the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events and programs to augment its collections of California, European and Asian artworks. The Crocker is located at 216 O Street in Downtown Sacramento. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday; 1st & 3rd Thursdays until 9 p.m. Free admission on Sundays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. is made possible through the support of Bank of America.
