Transcending Vision: American Impressionism, 1870–1940

HassamON VIEW THROUGH SEPTEMBER 25, 2011

Influenced by the new French painting, the American artists who embraced Impressionism from the 1880s to the first decades of the twentieth century were a diverse group of painters whose styles were as varied as the subjects and locales they chose to paint.  This exhibition features 125 paintings from the Bank of America Collection and traces the stylistic evolution of landscape painting as well as the changing attitude towards nature through an examination of works by prominent American artists including George Bellows, George Inness, Childe Hassam, Ernest Lawson, Lilla Cabot Perry, and Julian Alden Weir.

The exhibition is provided by Bank of America’s Art in our Communities™ program, which shares significant works from the Bank of America Collection with museums and nonprofit galleries across the country and around the world.
