Symposium: the Art of Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei

Art critic and scholar Arthur Danto famously noted that Andy Warhol’s Brillo Boxes (1964) marked the shift in art history that German philosopher Hegel had predicted: The end of art as we knew it. That shift opened the door to new ideas of what we can call art, and Warhol’s work went on to inspire countless artists of the late 20th century and beyond. Among them is contemporary Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, one of the most prominent artists working today, who considers Warhol to be a key influence. For this day of learning, join Eric Shiner, director of the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; and Sharon Matt Atkins, vice director of exhibitions and collections management at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, for talks about these pivotal artists followed by a conversation facilitated by Crocker Director and CEO Lial Jones. Following the talks, enjoy a wine reception in the Courtyard among Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads. A morning coffee reception and afternoon wine reception are included in the talk-only ticket. The talk-and-lunch option features a buffet by Crocker Cafe by Supper Club.

Talk and Lunch tickets must be purchased by March 25, 2016.
