The Japanese government named the potter Shimaoka Tatsuzo a Living National Treasure (ningen kokuho) in 1996. He had begun to study pottery at Tokyo Technical University in 1939, but the following year became a student of Shoji Hamada (1894–1978), one of the co-founders of the Mingei movement. Following World War II, during which time he served in Burma, Shimaoka set up a pottery kiln in Mashiko, next to Hamada’s kiln. In the 1960s, he toured Europe and was thereafter recognized as a cultural ambassador for the Mingei movement.
