Meadows and Mountains: The Art of William F. Jackson

November 6, 2009 – May 9, 2010

William F. Jackson was Sacramento's leading painter from 1880 until his death in 1936. Trained at the California School of Design in San Francisco, Jackson painted landscapes that depicted the rugged backcountry near Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada, as well as California hillsides carpeted with springtime poppies and lupine. He was appointed Director of the Crocker Art Museum at its founding in 1885, a position he held for 50 years. This will be the first retrospective exhibition of Jackson's works and will be accompanied by a catalogue written by Alfred C. Harrison, Jr., President of the North Point Gallery in San Francisco.
