Concert: Joe Gilman
Thursday, November 15
7 PM
Norman Rockwell wrote, "I love to tell stories in pictures. For me, the story is the first thing and the last thing." This concert is part of a series celebrating the exhibition American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell through musical storytelling. Acclaimed jazz pianist Joe Gilman's unique concept album Americanvas selected 10 modern American paintings, determined the original creative process used to create each artwork, and followed that same creative process to compose pieces as vehicles for jazz improvisation. Gilman, accompanied by musicians from the Brubeck Institute, will perform a composition from Americanvas inspired by Norman Rockwell's paintings along with other art-inspired selections. Gilman is the music director of the Brubeck Institute's Fellowship, a professor of music at American River College, an adjunct professor of jazz studies at Sacramento State, and was the music director of Capital Jazz Project for 14 years. Space is limited.
