 e Gates' interest in art\, plants\, and garden design began in her childho
 od. Her father was an artist and both parents encouraged her to become inv
 olved in art\, various crafts\, and gardening. She taught English in both 
 high school and college for a number of years before deciding to change ca
 reers and return to the field of landscape horticulture\, this time focusi
 ng on art and design.\n\n
