This special three-part class delves into the diverse realm of contemporary Native American artists. Take one or all three sessions. Crocker docents receive a special discount.

Session 1: Survey of Notable Artists
Through this survey presentation of the work of notable contemporary Native American artists, explore the unique challenges facing Native American artists and discuss traditional cultures and contemporary issues reflected in their work.

Session 2: Foundations in Tradition
Examine multiple aspects of contemporary California Native cultures and see how they are reflected in the works of the Crocker collection through slide presentation, discussion, and gallery viewing.

Session 3: Traditional Process in Contemporary Art
Explore the history, meaning, and construction of Pueblo pottery from prehistoric vessels to contemporary art forms. Discover how traditional designs and meanings can inform your own creative process, and paint a small bisque-fired pot with acrylic paint.

About the Instructor: 

Laurie Seban is a northern California native with a master's in art history from the University of California, Davis, specializing in non-Western and Modern art. She currently teaches Native American art at California State University, Sacramento. For the last 20 years, Seban has also taught preschoool and elementary art/art history classes, using hands-on projects that bring the art world to life for children. Seban will also teach Mosaic Tile Making.
