Below is a summary of the programs offered at the Museum, including Field Trips, After-school Activities and Student Exhibitions. For more information, download the 2007-08 GenCorp School & Teacher Programs Brochure or contact Stacy Beckley at 916.808.1182.

Field Trips
Teachers and youth group leaders can book guided or self-guided tours of the Museum, its collections and special exhibits. When booked in advance, Museum tours are free for youth groups from Sacramento County and $2 per student from other counties. Guided tours are offered Tuesday – Friday at 10 AM and 11 AM. Tours are 50 minutes in length, depending on grade level, and are led by docents, trained volunteer guides. To reserve, submit the Registration Form.

It is recommended that you preview the artwork scheduled to be on view prior to visiting with your class. You can download the Teacher Preview Pass for free admission during your preview visit.

Classes and groups can book the following themed guided tours based on age group:

  • The Elements of Art (Grades K-5)- Students learn how artists use the elements of art to construct their compositions.
  • Adventures at the Crocker (Grades K-5) - Younger viewers become immersed in the history of the Crocker and the stories created by artists while identifying how artistic styles reflect history.
  • Art Through the Ages (Grades 6-8) - Students explore works of art from different cultures and time periods, while learning about the history of the Crocker and its unique architecture.
  • Tools and Techniques (Grades 6-8) - Students will look at how artists use tools and techniques- fueled by their powers of imagination- to create amazing works of art.
  • Contemporary Art (Grades 9-12) - Students will explore the Crocker collection to examine how artists working after 1945 have used art to probe diverse personal, social and political issues.
  • Art and the Creative Process (Grades 9-12) - Students will look at how artists make choices to use certain tools and techniques to create works of art.
  • Special Exhibits (Grades 2-12) - All guided tours explore the Museum's permanent collection and special exhibits. To request a tour focusing exclusively on a special exhibit, please note your preference on the Registration Form.

Self-Guided Visits
Explore, discover and learn at your groups pace! To lead your own group through the galleries, you may schedule a self-guided visit, Tuesday-Friday beginning at 11:30 AM-4 PM, at least 4 weeks in advance. Submit the Registration Form to make a reservation. If you choose a self-guided tour, you can reserve materials to accompany your visit which can be checked out at the Front Desk.

After-school Activities
The Crocker offers an After-School Program for school and community groups of students ages 6-15. Held onsite at the Museum, the 90-minute program is designed to excite and inspire budding artists. Students will receive a guided interactive tour.

Groups must confirm transportation at the time of reservations and arrive at the Museum no later than 4 PM. Contact Emma Moore at 916.808.1961 for more information or to make a reservation.

Student Exhibitions
To recognize outstanding art by youth in the greater Sacramento region, the Crocker partners with schools, community organizations, and statewide agencies to organize a series of exhibits. Due to limited space during the expansion, the Crocker will continue its student exhibition program at Capital Public Radio's gallery located on the CSUS campus.
