Victorian Charm

With the arrival of Edwin Deakin’s work comes a carriage of Victorian delights. The Museum Store is flush with the fuss of Victoria’s time, a span that included grand tours galore (the Crocker family’s tour yielded enough art for a museum) and ladies in crisp white frocks painted by John Singer Sargent.

John Singer Sargent ’s languid ladies and charming children populate a clever Art Cube folding puzzle; $8.50

The Paris Deakin loved is included in Burton Holmes’ evocative Victorian-era book,
Travelogues: The Greatest Traveler of His Time, 1892-1952 with photos of Pigalle,
Pont Neuf and the Grand Palais, among hundreds of others, circa 1900; $49.99

Victorian ladies knew how to handle an embroidery
needle, as shown in Barbara Morris’s Victorian Embroidery: An Authoritative Guide and Gail Carolyn Sirna’s elegant book of paintings In Praise of the Needlewoman; $16.95 and $34.95, respectively

Fancy tea cakes would feel right at home on this trompe l’oeil doily plate in melamine. Add a French note with a “forever” croissant; $10 and $4, respectively

Proper Victorian ladies knew a thing or two about the finer, albeit feminine, arts and
crafts. They appreciated their pressed flowers – make your own today with a complete
flower press; $16.50.

The art of ribbon flower making reached its zenith during Victoria’s day, but we have new French silk ribbon flower pins, hand-made in Berkeley; $25
