Docents

Docent School Tour

Crocker docents are dedicated volunteers who are the link between the museum and the public, trained to help fulfill the Museum’s mission and to interpret its collections, exhibitions, architecture, and history for all visitors. Docents are Crocker ambassadors who support the Museum’s educational programs, bring art to life with in-gallery tours and facilitated art conversations, and share the excitement of art in the classrooms and with the community with in-person speakers and virtual presentations. For more than 60 years, Crocker docents have been an integral part of the Museum education team, ensuring a rewarding experience for all guests.

About the Docent Program

Docent Training Program
Application Process

Consider serving the Sacramento region community while building lifelong friendships as a member of the dedicated docent team. Docents not only get to interact with the public on a regular basis but also participate in a variety of ongoing educational programs to stay current and abreast of all new art being shown at the Crocker. The Crocker welcomes new docent applicants who are excited about art and want to share that love with the Museum’s visitors. There are currently 150 active and 50 sustaining docents.

Docents at the Crocker Art Museum participate in a nine-month learning experience that covers the Crocker’s collections, art history, art education, and touring techniques. Training includes lectures, interactive gallery experiences, workshops, field trips and hands-on studio art activities. Upon graduation there is a two-year probationary period during which time newly trained docents can finely hone their skills. But the learning doesn’t stop there, with a robust continuing education offering, this is truly life-long learning.

Docent Class of 2023

The Crocker strives to form a docent corps that reflects the rich diversity of the Museum's visitors and the Sacramento region. Docent trainees come from many backgrounds and stages of life. All that is necessary is a passion for art and learning and the enthusiasm to share that knowledge with visitors. Engaging and encouraging visitors to view, discuss, and become inspired by what they experience is what the docent program is all about!

The docent training program is conducted every two years. The next docent class will begin in 2025. Please contact the Crocker’s Education department at education@crockerart.org for more information and to apply.
