The Crocker Art Museum Association (CAMA) is a private, nonprofit public benefit corporation exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. CAMA shares governance of the Crocker Art Museum with the City of Sacramento.

The Crocker Art Museum Foundation (CAMF), a subsidiary of CAMA, was established in the 1980s to manage endowment funds to provide a reasonably stable and predictable stream of income to CAMA.

The Crocker is funded through a combination of public support (55 – 60%), earned income (25 – 30%), income from investments and endowment (4 – 7%), income from programs (3 – 7%), and a general fund allocation from the City of Sacramento (20 – 23%).

Public support is provided through gifts from individuals; corporate, foundation, and governmental grants; Museum support groups; memberships and fundraising events. Investment income is derived from a draw on earnings of the Endowment and interest on cash reserves.

The Crocker Art Museum is a public-private partnership established in May 1885 by a Deed of Gift from Margaret Crocker to the City of Sacramento. The Deed gave joint and equal control and management of the property known as the "E. B. Crocker Art Gallery" to the Mayor of the City of Sacramento and California Museum Association (today the Crocker Art Museum Association) as co-trustees.

The Museum was known as the E. B. Crocker Art Gallery until 1978, when it was renamed the Crocker Art Museum.

The history and vision of the Crocker Art Museum is rooted in the lives of its founders, Judge Edwin Bryant Crocker and Margaret Rhodes Crocker. Learn more about the Crocker family here.

Exhibitions organized or hosted by the Museum are typically scheduled three years in advance. Selection is based on a variety of criteria including aesthetic excellence and scholarly merit, relevance to the Museum's core mission, an other logistics like gallery location, exhibition schedule, cost, etc. Exhibitions are first discussed with the Chief Curator and then presented to Senior Staff who recommends whether an exhibition should be pursued.

Located on the first floor of the historic building, the Student & Community Exhibition space is designed to recognize and support outstanding art from programs in the greater Sacramento region. These exhibitions are curated and organized by schools, community organizations, and statewide agencies. To learn more about Student and Community exhibitions, please email education@crockerart.org.

The Curatorial Department aims to stay aware of current works being produced in and out of our region by routinely reviewing work by contemporary artists. We welcome submissions, but due to the large volume that we receive, we often cannot respond individually.

Suggested materials for submissions include:

• printed or digital images of the work

• an image list including title, date, medium, and dimensions

• a resume or curriculum vitae

• a self-addressed stamped envelope, if you wish for your materials to be returned.

Please do not send physical artwork without confirmation of interest from the Museum. Should the curatorial staff determine that the submission is a good fit for a program or exhibition, we will contact you.

The Museum does not provide conservation or appraisal services. If you are interested in having a work of art appraised or conserved, we suggest that you consult a reputable art dealer, appraiser, auction house or conservator.

Donations of two guest passes OR one family pass may be requested by filling out this form.

The Crocker is not currently booking events or photoshoots. We hope to bring back this offering in the future.

Unscheduled photoshoots are not permitted and visitors conducting photo or video shoots, formal photography, or using professional photography and videography equipment in the building may be asked to leave.

The Crocker welcomes walk-ins! While general admission is readily available, please note that some programs and events do sell out, so registering or buying tickets in advance is recommended.

Most visitors spend at least 2 – 3 hours exploring the galleries, though many note they could have spent much more time.

Admission grants you access to the entire Museum during all open hours on the day of your visit. The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM with extended hours until 9 PM on Thursdays.

To help us keep the art safe, we ask that you keep food, drinks, gum, umbrellas, large backpacks (including backpack baby carriers), and ink pens out of the galleries. Self-serve, coin-operated lockers are located on the first floor. Strollers, chest-carried baby packs, and pencils are permitted. Average-sized backpacks are allowed when worn on the front or at the side.

Yes. Museum visitors are welcome to bring their own wheelchairs and strollers on their visit. The Museum has a limited number of wheelchairs and strollers available on request and are offered to guests on a first come, first served basis. Light, portable, gallery stools are also available upon request and can be carried throughout the Museum. We ask that visitors not bring their own stool or chair into the galleries. Wagon-style strollers are not permitted.  

The Crocker welcomes personal photography. Please take photographs throughout the Museum unless a “no photography” symbol is posted near a specific artwork or exhibition. Share your art-ventures with us on social @crockerart!  

Flash, tripods, selfie-sticks, and professional photography and videography equipment are prohibited, even in areas where photography is allowed. Visitors conducting photo or video shoots, formal photography, or using professional photography and videography equipment in the building may be asked to leave.  

Printed or electronic images for publication (including electronic publication) or commercial use must be approved by the Museum prior to photography. Contact curatorial@crockerart.org to request the appropriate permissions. 

The Crocker café and Museum store are open to the public. You may access either location on the first floor without purchasing admission but must check in at the admission desk. Please note that the café has different operating hours than the Museum.

Yes! Totland is a dedicated space for our youngest visitors, located on the first floor of the historic building. This interactive play area provides a safe space for youngsters to climb, read, draw, and explore with the adults who accompany them.

The Museum also offers a variety of Kids + Family programs and classes throughout the year.  

Guest passes can be redeemed at the door. Advance registration is not required. Guest passes include general admission to the Museum and may not be applied to separate program and studio class registration.  

The Crocker will be open for private event rentals in 2024!

Guest Passes, which are a member benefit at the Contributor level and above, are one-time use passes to give to friends and family. Guest passes can be used for general admission and programs that are free with admission.  The number of guests your membership covers varies by category and requires at least one named cardholder to be present for admission.

For the Individual through Contributor levels of membership, your contribution is 100% tax-deductible. Higher levels of membership have varying amounts of deductibility.

Yes! During your visit, stop by the Admissions Desk to apply your general admission tickets towards a membership. You can also call the Membership Office at (916) 808-6730 within 30 days of your visit to apply your tickets towards a membership. 

Ticket purchases from multiple visits cannot be combined, and the number of tickets applied is limited to the number of individuals covered by the membership level. For example, one admission ticket may be applied to an Individual membership; up to two may be applied to a Family membership; and so on. 

Yes, you can update your membership at any time and receive additional benefits! Just call the Membership Office at (916) 808-6730 (Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM) to pay the difference between your current level and your new level.

Yes! Provide your name at the Admission Desk and a Visitor Services Representative will check you in.

If you are a new member, it takes 2 – 3 weeks to process and mail your membership card(s). However, your membership benefits are still active during this time.  

Yes! Contact the Membership Office at membership@crockerartmuseum.org or 916-808-6730 to request a new card. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.

The Crocker is unable to provide digital membership cards at this time, but it is something we hope to offer in the near future.

Membership cards are not transferable, and at least one cardholder must be present for guests to receive free admission. 

Members at the Student/Educator and Individual level are limited to one name printed on their card. Members at the Family level and above may have up to two names on the cards.
